Afterwards your guide will focus your attention on the highlights of one of the greatest museums in the world, the Hermitage museum, also known as the Winter Palace.
Your route takes you past the Nevsky Prospect, St. Petersburg’s most famous street, lined with magnificent palaces, churches and 18th and 19th century buildings. Constructed in 1907, the Church on Spilled Bloodwas built by Alexander III to honor his father, Alexander II, who was assassinated where the church now stands. The façade of the church has the feeling of a fairy tale, the interior is decorated with incredibly detailed mosaics designed and created by the most prominent Russian artists of the day. The Church was closed for services in 1930 and finally reopened in 1997 after almost 30 years of restoration in all its breathtaking former glory.
Today you will visit the Hermitage. With the possible exception of the Louvre, there is no museum in the world that rivals the Hermitage in size and quality. Its collection is so large that it would take years to view it in its entirety. Your guide will focus your attention on the highlights. The museum is
especially strong in Italian Renaissance and French Impressionist paintings. The splendor of the museum is epitomized by the grandeur of numerous reception halls, such as the Throne, Ball, Malachite and Gold Rooms.
Day 2. “Peterhof park”.
Travel to Peterhof, overlooking the Gulf of Finland to see the former summer residence of the Royal family. Enjoy its countless gorgeous fountains, beautiful lay out and charming atmosphere. Find there a small Royal Palace known as Mon Plaisir. Set in magnificent gardens,
Peterhof Park is reminiscent of Versailles. It was almost completely destroyed by the Nazis in World War II but has been restored to its full splendor. The parks are dotted with countless fountains, charming pavilions and summer houses. The fountains of Peterhof is one of the most famous tourist attractions. The diversity of fountains in the park is surprising: from monumental the Samson Cascade to the ever popular Joke Fountains, including one which sprays anyone who steps on a particular paving stone.
