It is the fourth of the Cathedral with the largest dome in the world after that of St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican in Rome, St. Paul's Cathedral in London and Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. It was designed by French architect August Montferrand and was built in 40 years, from 1818 to 1858. Since 1931 it has become a museum. Currently around one million people visit the cathedral each year.

Built by the French-born architect August Montferrand to be the main church of the Russian Empire, the cathedral was under construction for 40 years and was decorated in the most elaborate way possible. Also you will see one of the oldest architectural ensembles of Saint Petersburg, Alexander Nevsky Lavra which was founded in 1710 on that very place where according to the legend Alexander Nevsky defeated Swedish troops. From the very beginning the Alexander Nevsky Lavra got the status of the most prestigious burial place in Imperial Russia. The members of royal family, priests, outstanding governors and commanders were buried there.
