The Russian Museum, formerly the Russian Museum of the Imperial Majesty Alexander III, is one of the most important museums of St. Petersburg, entirely devoted to Russia, whose headquarters are located in the beautiful Mikhailovsky Palace, work of Italian architect Carlo Rossi. The museum was established on 13 April 1895, after the coronation of Nicholas II to commemorate his father, Alexander III. The original collection was composed of artworks taken from the Hermitage, the Palace of Alexander and the Imperial Academy of the Arts. After the Russian Revolution, many private collections were nationalized and relocated to the Russian State Museum. Among these was included the first and most valuable version of the Black Square of Kazimir Malevich. The other branches of the museum are the Summer Palace of Peter I (1710-14), the Marble Palace of Count Orlov (1768-85), the Mikhailovsky Castle of Emperor Paul I (1797-1801), and the Palace Stroganov, designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli (1752-54).
