You will visit one of the oldest architectural ensembles of Saint Petersburg, Alexander Nevsky Lavra which was founded in 1710 on that very place where according to the legend Alexander Nevsky defeated Swedish troops. From the very beginning the Alexander Nevsky Lavra got the status of the most prestigious burial place in Imperial Russia. The members of royal family, priests, outstanding governors and commanders were buried there.
The first mention in the documents was on July 1710, when Peter I, examining the place near the Black River (now the river Monastyrka), ordered to build here the Alexander Nevsky monastery on the supposed site of the victory of Prince Alexander Nevsky Yaroslav, over the Swedes in the Battle of the Neva.
The official date of foundation - the day the consecration of the first wooden Church of the Annunciation - was on March 25, 1713.
