Yusupov Palace Walking Tour

The palace is particularly famous because of the Prince Felix Yusupov, its last owner. The precise course of the murder of Rasputin is still controversial. According to Yusupov, the night of December 16, 1916, the Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, a cousin of the Tsar, and he even invited Rasputin to the palace. They served to Rasputin cakes and red wine with a dose of poison sufficient to kill five men. Noting that the poison seemed to have no effect on Rasputin Yusupov took out a pistol and shot him in the back. The two men left the room leaving Rasputin dead. Returning later to the scene, Rasputin Yusupov was trying to get up and flee. Yusupov and his accomplices fired three times on Rasputin, but it was still trying to recover. He then knocked on the head with an iron bar and then drove in a blanket before throwing in the Moika. According to the autopsy subsequently Rasputin would kill or poison or multiple injuries caused by bullets and beatings with iron bars but hypothermia. Much of the narrative of Yusupov is now considered unlikely. The October Revolution took place less than a year after the assassination of Rasputin. The palace was nationalized. It was requisitioned by the Commissioner of Education of the city in 1925. While many palaces were converted into the workplace, the Commissioner of Education decided to make the palace a public museum. Today the palace is used as a palace of culture for teachers and museum dedicated to the lifestyle of the Russian nobility before the Revolution.
