The Fortress of St. Peter and St. Paul, (also known as Peter and Paul Fortress) is the citadel of Saint Petersburg (Russia), built in 1703 by the architect Domenico Trezzini for order of Peter the Great. The laying of the cornerstone took place on 16 May (according to the Julian calendar; on May 27, according to the Gregorian calendar) 1703 on the Island of Hares, on the River Neva. Inside the fortress there are many buildings of historic or artistic interest, the main Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, but also the chocolate factory (active), the Trubetskoy bastion, the Grand Ducal Crypt and the Historical Museum City of St. Petersburg, the Museum of the Mint and others.
